Kelly & Ryan

About Us

Ryan Ballentine

If Ryan were an animal, he would be a puppy who always wanted to play, but also forgot that fetch indoors often ends in broken household objects and minor injuries. But don't be fooled - Ryan is (mostly) a mature man now. A few highlights from his recent years include: purchasing shorts that are not made of mesh, eating cereal for dinner only once a week, and moving his bed from the floor to a frame.

When Ryan isn't building his Bireme Capital empire, he is likely contemplating some esoteric enigma posed by a fellow Sophist. He is enlightened and academically engaged, which makes him a formidable (and stubborn) rival in any dialectic. He's so handsome that Kelly's muscles feel a little like Jell-O when she sees him smile. But he also makes her muscles feel like Jell-O when he announces he's going to free climb the closest cliff face or bike the wrong way down a congested city street. Ryan makes Kelly feel like the best version of herself, and she cannot wait to be his official partner in the game (activity?) of life.

Kelly Kirby

Kelly is bubbly yet intellectual, sweet yet fierce, and down-to-earth yet classy (well, minus the whole ketchup-on-eggs thing). When she goes off to work, she somehow manages to be professional and intimidating, yet also the most adorable thing Ryan has ever seen. She's killing it whether she's hosting a dinner party, trying a case, laying out on the spikeball court, or jumping around on the dance floor. She's too good at baking so Ryan doesn't let her do it because he'll get fat.

If not engaged in some rigorous lawyering, Kelly is probably engaged in some vigorous exercising. She runs or spins every day, which Ryan finds impressive and completely baffling. Her only weaknesses are sometimes caring too much and a callous unwillingness to share food.

Our Love Story

Like every good 21st century love story, Ryan and Kelly's began with a dating app. Kelly's friend convinced her that she wouldn't get murdered so Kelly reluctantly signed up. Meanwhile, Ryan was trolling every dating app known to mankind for the girl of his dreams... thus far in vain!

On other first dates, Ryan had merely taken his date out for coffee or a drink. But somehow, Ryan knew this was going to be a very important date, so he took Kelly to dinner at an upscale Mexican resturant in West Hartford. Luckily, the date was very cheap; Ryan and Kelly were so busy talking and generally hitting it off that all they managed to order was guacamole!

After their guacamole, Ryan and Kelly went to a bar where Kelly got the early stamp of approval from some of Ryan's friends. Like a true gentleman, Ryan walked Kelly to her car. Unlike a true gentleman, Ryan may or may not have snuck a brief first-date kiss in the parking garage. The date went so well that they got together again the following night for board games.

Setting the tone for their relationship to come, Ryan and Kelly's courtship revolved around activities. Rock climbing, yoga, board games, camping, wine tasting, soccer, dancing, concerts - Kelly and Ryan had the opportunity to get to know one another in all manner of situations. For instance, Kelly learned that Ryan has a "unique" (outspoken and controlling) style of play when it comes to board games, which is exacerbated when he's losing. Kelly also learned that Ryan was interesting beyond belief, forcing her to exercise her mind in ways in which she never would have done without his provocation, in order to keep pace.

Within a few weeks, Kelly had effectively moved into Ryan's apartment, which, at the time, was "furnished" with a cardboard box full of balls, mattress on the floor, and a Philadelphia Eagles comforter made to look like a jersey (think: green and iridescent).

The ultimate test of their budding relationship occurred in the middle of a desert during Burning Man, when Kelly lived in a yurt with six of Ryan's former frat brothers for a week. After eight days full of sand storms and sleep deprivation, but devoid of showers and running water, Ryan and Kelly were more in love than when they started. This confirmed for Kelly what she had thought since their first days of dating -- Ryan was definitely the one.

Ryan and Kelly went to Foxwoods, where Kelly thought they would just be meeting a few friends. Instead, Ryan invited a whole slew of their best friends from across the country, and had their families sneak into their suite ahead of time. Their families decorated the room with flowers, balloons, and champagne, and set up multiple camera angles to capture the big moment while the crew hid next door.

When Ryan proposed, Kelly was surprised and overjoyed... or, well, maybe more accurate is "shocked and overwhelmed." Basically, her brain was broken. She couldn't say much more than "oh my god" for the next several minutes. (We had to go to the instant replay booth to confirm that she actually said yes. The call on the field was confirmed.) Soon after the proposal, Kelly's mom led the surprise family entrance, and Kelly was physically incapable of hugging her mom. Noni had to grab her arms and wrap them around her. Upon seeing the decorations, Kelly thought that the previous guests had forgotten their stuff.

Once Kelly's wits returned, a night of eating, drinking and dancing with family and friends sealed a wonderful, memorable day.

Most Important People

Steve Ballentine
Groom's Father

Steve is master of an astonishing array of diverse tasks, including parenting, investing, traveling, photography, and philanthropy. When he isn't doing one of those things, he's probably flying somewhere to root on the Syracuse Orange, or enforcing some vigilante justice as his secret superhero alterego, Restaurant Etiquette Man.

Jim Kirby
Bride's Father

Kelly got all of her best and worst traits from Jim. They are both detail oriented, but also a little obsessive. They know how to have a good time, but also know the pains of anxiety. It's a hard world to live in when not everyone is bothered by a pizza's imperfect topping ratios. But that's okay, because Kelly and Jim have each other to talk to about you easygoing people who just don't understand.

Beth Ballentine
Groom's Mother

Mamma B was the consummate mother to Ryan, and is now the consummate friend. But don't worry, she can still activate mommy mode when her children are in need (or when Ryan is doing something he shouldn't). Her extracurriculars include writing fiction and non-fiction, hosting at the lake house on a semi-professional level, and dominating on the ice for her Mother Ducks hockey team.

Noni Kirby
Bride's Mother

For her patience with her children, she should really be called Saint Noni Kirby. But Noni is more than a mom. She is an artist who ran her own business while also running a household, she is a tennis player whose forehand is second only to her game-day wardrobe, she is a fiercely loyal friend to her daughter and many lucky others, and she is undeniably defying her age at 60 years old.

Phil LaRocca
Officiant

Future brother-in-law Phil is a fun, smart, thoughtful and all around swell guy. You know, the kind of guy you want to officiate your wedding, or even marry your sister.

Beth Pfalzgraf
Maid of Honor

Beth became best friends with Kelly in middle school, even though Kelly had a perm and looked a little like young Chelsea Clinton. Nowadays, Beth and Kelly do adult things like eating their way through foreign countries, acting as one another's life coach, and ordering table wine by the liter.

Evan Tindell
Groomsman

Evan, Ryan's full partner in both friendship and business, has an impish yet lovable penchant for doing things like shoving a pie in your face and then rubbing his face on your face to atone for it.

Shanie Ballentine
Bridesmaid

Shanie is the best sister, and also the best person. Ryan and Shanie have a great partnership: Shanie tries to keep Ryan from hurting himself, and Ryan tries to get Shanie outside her comfort zone, which frequently involves Shanie hurting herself.

Ryan Kirby
Groomsman

Ryan is like a bearded version of Kelly covered in tattoos. They both think they're hilarious, enjoy pushing Noni Kirby's buttons, and love to make Jim Kirby belly laugh with Austin Powers impressions. Growing up, Kelly wouldn't let Ryan play with her unless he went by the alter-ego "Princess Stephanie." Yes, photo evidence does exist.

Olivia Spiak
Bridesmaid

When Liv didn't run away after Kelly turned off all her bedroom lights to show Liv her "cool lamp" collection, Kelly knew Liv would be a good friend. When Kelly told Liv she couldn't fall asleep without listening to Harry Potter on tape, and Liv said she did the same, Kelly knew Liv would be a friend for life.

Andrew Dallas
Groomsman

Ryan and Andrew share a love of many things. Sure, some intellectual things, like book club, and active things, like ultimate frisbee. But mainly dumb things, like Four Loko, Homestar Runner and the cold-blooded murder of teammates in Counter-Strike. Andrew may or may not have lived in the Ballentine family basement for weeks at a time.

Cailey Sundell
Bridesmaid

Cail and Kelly met at BU's freshman orientation during a romantic ride on the School of Management cruise. From Latin excursions to hot pink living room walls, Kelly and Cail spent four memorable years living together, binge watching TV shows they're too embarrassed to name, and abusing bronzer.

Dave Nole
Groomsman

Known as Papa Nole since well before he was a father, Davenole is the responsible, yet down-for-everything friend that every groom needs. Dave and Ryan were freshman roommates. Dave is pictured here in full freshman-year glory.

Lindsay Weber
Bridesmaid

Kelly found her former roommate Linds after thoroughly stalking the UConn Law accepted students Facebook page, which is normal and not creepy. Highlights of their friendship include reenacting scenes from Always Sunny, working as a team to finish a batch of cookie dough in one sitting, and surviving life in Hartford.

DeRon Brown
Groomsman

DeRon has lived with Ryan in more states than anyone. It's only two, but still. DeRon also has more capital letters in his name than anyone. Yeah again only two, but still. Ryan says his name is pronounced 'darren', but DeRon's mom thinks otherwise.

Aakash Chokshi
Groomsman

Aakash and Ryan bonded over FIFA, Adventure Club, and maybe one too many shots of Fireball. Aakash and Kelly bonded over a love of celebrity gossip, fire jams, and the antics of LeBron James.
